Basic repair work in the heating system that should not be neglected

When we talk about the heating system as an integral part of your home's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, we think of it as a system that provides warmth and comfort on cold winter days. However, we often forget to maintain it on a regular basis and only call our HVAC contractor when there is a major problem - like a furnace or heat pump that won't turn on. In this blog post, we want to draw your attention to 3 problems your system may be having that should never be ignored, and the signs that signal these problems.

The heating system refuses to switch on

This may seem like a trivial issue, but some homeowners may be hesitant to do this if they have other methods of heating their home. But if your furnace or heat pump won't turn on or provide any heat at all, it's a major problem.

You don't want the temperature to drop and realize that your backup heating method isn't working properly. During seasonal temperature drops, HVAC professionals are at their busiest. Contact your trusted contractor immediately if your system isn't working or if it isn't producing hot air.

Short cycles and frequent switching off

Short cycling is an indication that something is preventing your heating system from completing a heating cycle. This is a sign that a service failure is imminent. When your heating system fails to complete a cycle, it means your home is not warm enough and you are not comfortable. Short cycling can occur for a number of reasons. If left unresolved, it also puts a lot of stress on your system and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Clicking, hissing, popping, and other noises

Hearing loud, unusual noises is one of the easiest ways for your heating system to let you know it needs help. These noises can range from loud bangs, rattles, squeaks, scrapes, and hisses to grating and clicking noises. For gas furnaces, the most common noises are bangs and clicks, which can be a sign of an ignition system problem.

If you hear a clicking sound at the end of the heating cycle after the blower motor shuts off, this could be a sign of cracks in the furnace's metal heat exchanger, called microcracks. You may not be able to see them, but they can allow CO (carbon monoxide) gas to enter your home. Smelling like sulfur or rotten eggs in your home is a sign of CO leakage, which is another cause for concern.

When you first turn on your heating system, the pilot will make a clicking sound as it tries to ignite a flame. As it tries and fails, it will continue to click. This could be a sign that there is a blocked gas valve or a dangerous leak in your gas line. In a situation like this, you better turn off your heating system and call your HVAC contractor. Providing our services in Philadelphia, we at AC Comfort HVAC LLC are ready to address any of the above mentioned problems and more.
